Awareness Programme on ‘Drugs and Substance Abuse’

LEH.April 27: In continuation to the awareness programme on ‘drugs and substance abuse’ being organized by the Cultural wing of the Department of Information & Public Relations Leh, under the aegis of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, GOI and District Administration Leh; a similar programme was organised today at Govt. Girls Higher Secondary School, Leh.

Psychiatrist & Drug De-Addiction Specialist SNM Hospital Leh Dr. Padma Angmo, Principal, Govt Girls Hr. Secondary School, Kunzang Dolma, Assistant Exhibition & Culture Officer, DIPR, Stanzin Wangmo, Assistant Information Officer, DIPR, Stanzin Palmo, Culture Assistant, DIPR Sonam Youton, faculty and staff members of Govt Girls Hr. Sec School were present during the programme.

 Psychiatrist & Drug De-Addiction Specialist SNM Hospital Leh Dr. Padma Angmo, spoke at length about the various cases of drug menace in Ladakh and measures to apply to come out of substance.  Highlighting the severity of the drug menace in Leh, Dr Padma said over 500 patients had visited Psychiatry OPD last year seeking assistance for substance abuse disorders and out of these more than 50 drug addict patients got admitted. Dr Padma emphasized that through education and awareness individuals can combat drug addiction and its devastating consequences.

Two short films titled “Echoes of Redemption” and “Trapped” based on drug and substance abuse were screened during the awareness programme providing comparative narratives of the realities of addiction, and its ill affect on individuals, families and societies. During the event, Principal Govt. Girls Hr. Sec School, Kunzang Dolma and AE&CO, Stanzin Wangmo also shared their views and advised students to stay away from drugs and substance Abuse.

Later, students were encouraged to speak and consult Dr. Padma Angmo with their concerns related to mental well-being.
