NIT Srinagar organises seminar on semiconductors

 Srinagar, Mar 13: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar on Wednesday organized a seminar on ‘Contribution of NIT Srinagar in the field of Semiconductors. The event commemorated the momentous occasion of the foundation laying ceremony by Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi for three semiconductor facilities across the nation.

The event was organized by the Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, NIT Srinagar at the Common Hall of the Institute.  The proceedings of the session on semiconductors were kick-started by 9:30 AM.

The inaugural session was hosted by Prof.Najeeb-Ud-Din who spoke about the history of ‘Semiconductors in India and the way forward. He also highlighted the contribution of Indian scientists in various fields.

It was followed by Dr. Sheikh Aamir Ahsan, a faculty member at Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering who delivered his expert talk on ‘Semiconductor Era in India: Opportunities Challenges and our potential Contribution.

In his speech, Dr. Ahsan covered the background of semiconductor industry, global landscape, industry initiatives, activities of NIT Srinagar and call for action. India’s semiconductor market is currently -$34B (2023) and it is expected to increase to $100B in 2032.

“This industry is expected to create 300 thousand jobs by 2026. The Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering) has been running successfully a PG (M Tech) programme in Microelectronics from 2015. “Design tools including Synopsys, Mentor Graphics, C2S (Chip IN Cloud) etc are being used by the department to train the students at the Institute,” Dr. Ahsan said.

He said concluding his talk thanked Prof Najeeb ud din for giving him the chance to speak on the said occasion, and also thanked the Head of the Department, Dr Gausia Qazi for her support in organizing this seminar.

At 10:30 AM sharp, more than 400 participants including Registrar Prof. Atikur Rehman, Deans, senior faculty members and administrative staff watched live stream of Honorable PM Modi’s address on India’s Techade – Chips for Viksit Bharat, who also laid the foundation stone of three semiconductor projects worth about ₹1.25 lakh crore via video conferencing.

Following the foundation laying ceremony of three semiconductor facilities in the country by Honorable PM Modi, the event at NIT Srinagar proceeded to further discussions that covered the background of semiconductor industry and significance. The global landscape of semiconductors was also explored by the participants.

The event concluded at 1 PM with an open-ended discussion with the students. This interactive segment allowed students to share their thoughts, ask questions, and express their opinions on the semiconductors industry in India and how it can contribute to this growing area of technology.

NIT Srinagar had set up an organizing Committee, headed by Prof R. N. Mir Dean (R&C), Prof. Gausia Qazi Head ECE Department as Convenor and Prof M S Mir Dean (AA), Prof A. Liman Dean (SW), Prof Najeeb-ud-din ECE Department, Prof A. Rehman (Registrar) and Mr. Faisal Irshad Ganie DR (Admin) as administrators for the event.
