LMD conducts Consumer Awareness Programmes

SRINAGAR, AUGUST 05: On the direction of Controller Legal Metrology Department (LMD) J&K, Majid K. A. Drabu, consumer awareness programmes were today conducted throughout Jammu and Kashmir.

On the occasion, consumers were educated about their rights and responsibilities. Emphasis was laid down on educating consumers about various aspects of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and the rules made there under.

Consumers were advised to check following statutory information on pre-packaged commodities covered under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 which includes: name and address of the manufacturer, packer or importer, name of the commodity, net quantity, maximum retail price, month and year of manufacture, best before or use by date, size of the commodity wherever relevant, consumer care details (phone number and e-mail address) and country of origin or assembly or manufacture in case of imported commodities.

In case any of the above mentioned declarations is not provided on the retail package or if any of the above mentioned declaration is false, consumers were told to approach the concerned Legal Metrology officer for legal action against the manufacturer, packer or importer.

Besides, consumers were advised to ensure that no trader resorts to short weighment, short measurement or uses any non-standard weight or measure in any transaction or for protection.

The department officials distributed posters with the consumers for educating them about various provisions of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and the rules made there under. Moreover, Department officials shared Department’s toll free consumer helpline number 18001807114 and website www.jklm.nic.in containing contact details of all Legal Metrology officers with the consumers for redress of their grievances.

Department has been instrumental in resolving consumer grievances filed both offline as well as through online mode. In one such instance, a consumer got a refund of Rs. 50000 from a gold jeweller in Srinagar after the intervention of the Legal Metrology Department.

Consumer expressed his satisfaction for the timely and effective intervention of the Department.

Likewise, several consumer grievances involving overcharging on pre-packaged commodities were also resolved by the Department on priority basis.

Legal Metrology Department J&K is fully committed to resolving the genuine public grievances within the ambit of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and the rules made there under.
