5 smugglers detained under PSA; over 150 bovine smuggling attempts thwarted by April 2024: Jammu Police

In a stern move, authorities have invoked the Public Safety Act (PSA) against five individuals identified as habitual bovine smugglers. These smugglers, operating in an organized manner, posed a continuous threat, according to a police spokesperson. The detained individuals include Raj Ali alias Kalu Gujjar, Ghulam Murtaza, Shakeel Mohammad, Muskan Ali, and Jaffer Ahmed, all residents of Jammu district.

Police vigilance has resulted in thwarting a staggering 152 bovine smuggling bids within the district so far this year. These proactive efforts have not only disrupted smuggling operations but also protected the animals.

As a consequence of these interventions, 1354 bovines have been successfully rescued from the clutches of smugglers. Additionally, 140 vehicles used in illegal transportation have been seized.

The authorities have not stopped at thwarting smuggling attempts. They have arrested a total of 133 individuals involved in these crimes. Importantly, the focus is on repeat offenders, with the PSA being used to deter their continued involvement.

The Jammu Police’s firm stance, including the use of the PSA against repeat offenders, sends a clear message that bovine smuggling will not be tolerated. This decisive action is expected to significantly disrupt smuggling rings and protect animals in the region.
