World Environment Day Celebrated at SAS&T-Leh Campus, University of Ladakh
Leh, June 5,2025: World Environment Day, observed on 5th June 2025, was celebrated with great enthusiasm at the School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SAS&T), Leh Campus, University of Ladakh. The event was graced by Prof. D. Namgyal, Dean, Agricultural Sciences, SAS&T-Stakna, Leh Campus, University of Ladakh, as the chief guest. He was joined by Prof. Deldan Namgail, Dr. Kunzes Angmo, Dr. Sonam Spaldon, Dr Lobzang Stanzen, Dr. Thinlas Norbu, Dr. Shamim Ali, Dr. Padma Angmo, Dr. Dechan Chuskit, Dr Kunzang Lamo, non-teaching staffs and students from the Basic Agriculture Training (BAT) and B.Sc. (Hons) Agriculture programs.


The program commenced with a welcome and introductory address by Dr. Lozang Stanzen, Assistant Professor (Agronomy). He emphasized the importance of World Environment Day, its global significance, and elaborated on the 2025 theme, which focuses on environmental sustainability and the urgent need to avoid the use of plastics. He also shed light on Ladakh’s unique environment and the importance of its conservation.
In the address of world environment day gathering Dr. D. Namgyal discussed the growing influence of western disturbances and how they are altering the climatic patterns in Ladakh. He highlighted the fragile ecosystem of the region and stressed the urgency of collective action to protect it. He also raised concerns about the increasing presence of microplastics in the environment and their harmful effects on both human and animal health. Prof. Namgyal urged everyone, especially the youth, to adopt eco-friendly practices and become active participants in preserving the natural environment.
As part of the celebration, a drawing competition was organized on the themes: “Beat Plastic”, “Climate Change” and “Green Planet”. The competition aimed to raise environmental awareness among students through creative expression. Dr. Kunzes Angmo and Dr. Sonam Spaldon were the judges for the competition. From the B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture program, Padma Lhanzes secured the first prize, followed by Dorjay Gyaltsen in second place and Tsewang Rabgay in third. From the Basic Agriculture Training (BAT) program, Tashi Dolker and Akbar Ali were recognized for their outstanding artwork.
The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Kunzang Lamo, Assistant Professor, Fruit Science, expressed gratitude to all the guests, participants, and organizers for making the event a success and reinforcing the collective commitment to environmental protection.
