The Centre for Women’s Studies, JU organizes a Gender Sensitization Workshop for the Students and Scholars of the Department of Political Science.

JAMMU, October 13: The Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu organized the 6th workshop under the ongoing series for the students and scholars of the Department of Political Science on Friday, 13th October, 2023. Dr. Monika Narang, Faculty, The Law School was the resource person.

The program began with a welcome address by Prof. Vishav Raksha, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies who explained that by conducting such workshops the Centre is trying to create Gender awareness among on campus students and scholars. Further, she said that we have to understand the concept of Difference and Equality wherein she explained that no two individuals are same and by acknowledging the differences we have to build a society where equal opportunities are provided to all irrespective of Gender.

Prof. Baljit Singh Mann, Head, Department of Political Science,spoke about the importance of such workshops and applauded the efforts of the Centrefor providing the opportunity to the students for being part of this Gender Sensitization Workshop.Further he narrated anincident wherein he explained that Gender sensitivity ismany a times even missing among the educated people.

Dr. Monika Narang, the key resource person for the workshop, spoke about concept of Gender Inequality and elaborated on the legal provisions for the women. She deliberated on the various issues related to women like Sati system, Dowry system, Sexual Harassment, Cyber Voyeurism, Stalking etc. and also suggested various legal provisions to curb these problems. Further she shared her personal experiences and through various examples, she explained the prevalence of gender inequality in the family and society at large.

A large number of students and scholars from the Department of Political Science very enthusiastically participated in the workshop and shared their personal experiences and raised many queries on the issues like Dowry, Women’sInheritance, Social Expectations, and Gender Roles etc. which were answered to their satisfaction by the Resource person and the Director, CWS. Among others who were present were Dr. Ellora Puri and Dr. Mool Raj.The workshop was conducted and coordinated by Dr. Saranjit Kaur, and the formal vote of thanks was presented by Ms. Kunzang Angmo both Faculty members, Centre for Women’s Studies who also looked after the digital modalities of the workshop.
