Street Play “Dheeth’ performed by Rangyug at SMVDU

REASI, March 17: On the fourth day of the Theatre festival “Trikuta Natya Utsav”, a Nukkad natak in dogri “Dheeth” was staged at SMVDU.

Vice Chancellor Prof. R K Sinha, Registrar Nagendra Singh Jamwal JKAS along with faculty, staff and students of SMVDU witnessed the mesmerising street play.

Earlier in his address, Prof. Sinha has reiterated the importance of such festivals and its importance in character building of students. The play begins with the journey of a sadhu and his Chela towards Indralok. While flying towards their destination, the sadhu on seeing the holy city of Jammu, decides to descend here. First he wants to take a dip in the sacred Tawi river also known as Surya Putri, but they both were horrified to see the polluted water and found that the river has ceased to exist and there flows a dirty nallah in its place.

They then moved towards the jambwant cave and found that it is all covered by a long row of shops selling junk food and other eatables. They moved from there and suddenly came across a group of persons weeping bitterly over the death of a friend. The person had apparently died of drinking yoghurt kept in a recycled polythene bag for about a week or so. The funeral procession was stuck in a lane that has shrunk to less than two feet because of illegal and unauthorized encroachments on both sides. Sadhus decided to fly away in disgust.

The street play was staged by Rangyug, who are an acclaimed theatre group from Jammu. President BCA, Dr Rakesh Thusoo and Dr Kamni Pathania, Vice President Board of Cultural Activities appreciated the theme of the play and its context to the present.
