Reasi admin mulls major crackdown on poppy cultivators, perpetrators of drug abuse

REASI, MAY 30: Taking a strong stand against the menace of drug abuse, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Reasi, Rakesh Kumar today asked the enforcement departments to adopt a coordinated and multi-pronged approach to tackle the issue in the district.

Special emphasis was laid on eradicating poppy cultivation. The ADC called for joint action by the Agriculture and Forest departments against those involved in the illegal activity.

Chairing a meeting with key stakeholders here today, ADC Rakesh Kumar reviewed the status of cases registered under the NDPS Act. He directed police officials to go after the perpetrators with full force and bring them to the book. The educational institutions were asked to conduct debates, seminars and awareness campaigns in collaboration with the Social Welfare, Health and Police departments, highlighting the vital role of youth and educational institutions in combating substance abuse.

To tackle drug supply and illegal trade, the ADC mandated frequent and surprise inspections by the Assistant Drug Controller and local police. He called for enhanced surveillance and strict punitive measures against perpetrators.  

The meeting was attended by ACR Nitin Verma, DFO Sunil Singh, DySP HQ, CEO, Tehsildars, DIO (Info) and other sectoral officers.
