PSPS GCW Gandhinagar organises a filed visit to Balgran

JAMMU, 27 March 2024: The Department of Psychology of PSPS Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu organised a field visit to  Balgran – A Charitable Home for Destitute Children at Channi Rama, Jammu, on 27th of March, 2024 as an outreach program. The visit was flagged off by Worthy Principal, Prof. (Dr.) SP Saraswat. He emphasised on the importance of being sensitive towards the needs of others and developing an empathetic approach towards individuals in need to psychosocial care and support .A group of 41 students from current semesters was accompanied by the faculty members and non teaching staff of the department.

The visit was planned with the   aim to sensitise the students about needs and aspirations of children who lack parental care and family bonding due to various reasons such as being orphaned, poverty or socio-political conflict. Balgran is the destination for such children that provide basic facilities, education and homely environment to the residents.More than 120 children are the beneficiaries of this charitable trust from the age range of 5 to 16 years . At the start of the program,  staff members of the trust gave an orientation to the college students about its functioning,  management and facilities available for the beneficiaries.The students along with the faculty members had an interactive session and group discussions with the resident students, wherein they shared their experiences, daily routine, future goals and ambitions. A brief Cultural programme was also organised for the children to showcase their interests and hidden potential.

The visit provided an opportunity to the students of psychology to apply theoretical knowledge, enhance their counselling skills such as rapport building, empathy, taking case study and psychological assessment. The visit also instilled  a sense of  social responsibility and belongingness in the students towards the marginalised and underprivileged groups of the society.

This field visit was efficiently managed by Dr Ujjwal Sharma, Ms. Vinay Lata, Dr Rachna Devi, Ms Mehar Gupta, Ms Rohini Sharma and Vikram Singh.
