Jammu observes World Down Syndrome Day

DC Avny Lavasa urges public to accept children with special needs

JAMMU, MARCH 21: World Down Syndrome Day was observed in District Jammu with a function held at Muskan Home for Mentally Challenged Children in Channi Rama Jammu. Deputy Commissioner, Avny Lavasa presided over the event.

The celebration focused on this year’s theme “With Us Not For Us” and highlighted a human rights-based approach to disability. The event emphasised fair treatment, equal opportunities and freedom for individuals with Down Syndrome to make their own choices.

Various activities were held including a balloon race, seminar on hygiene activities, dance session and cake cutting ceremony. Children with special needs participated in these activities.

The Deputy Commissioner distributed Nirmaya insurance cards to the inmates and assured support for regular health check-ups speech therapy and occupational therapy sessions for children with special needs. She appealed to the public to accept children with special needs and help them integrate into society.

She also emphasised the importance of raising awareness about Down Syndrome to ensure fair and equal participation of individuals with special needs.
