DLSA B’gam organizes awareness prog. at Central Jail Srinagar


BUDGAM, MAY 20: District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Budgam organized an awareness programme on the ‘SCLSC campaign in Jails of India for filing SLPs,’ at Central Jail Srinagar, today.
The event was conducted under the supervision of O.P Bhagat, Chairman DLSA, Budgam and under the guidance of Nusrat Ali Hakak, Secretary DLSA Budgam.
The objective of this campaign was to inform the inmates about the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC) in jails of India for filing SLPs & to educate them about the process and availability of filing special leave petitions (SLPs) through legal aid, and it also aimed to ensure access to justice for the inmates who remain unrepresented despite having viable legal remedies.


DLSA Budgam had deputed Legal aid defense Counsels as resources person for the said awareness session.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief LADC, Lateef Ahmad Khan said that the campaign is aimed to help the ‘legally vulnerable’ inmates, particularly those requiring urgent legal intervention aside from prisoners who have not filed appeals against conviction and those who failed to secure bail despite serving more than half of their maximum punishment.


Assistant Legal Aid Defense Counsels, Shahistah Gani and Fozia Shafi also spoke on the occasion and informed the inmates about the SCLSC campaign in jails of India for filing SLPS and educated them about the process & availability of filing special leave petitions (SLPS) through legal aid.
Legal aid defense counsels Budgam were deputed by DLSA Budgam to Central Jail in order to actively engage in promoting the campaign by conducting visit to central jail and by informing the eligible convicts of their legal rights and in accessing legal aid to approach the Hon’ble Supreme Court to identify convicts who may be eligible for remission of sentence or premature release & sensitize them in availing the remedy of filing special leave petition (SLPs) similarly through legal Services for getting enoverated from their conviction.


The programme witnessed the active participation of Shahbaz Hussain, incharge Superintendent Central Jail Srinagar, officials of Prison Legal aid Clinic and PLVs existing at Central jail Srinagar, police personnels, jail inmates, PLVs of DLSA Budgam, etc.
