Department of Law, University of Jammu organized a guest lecture of Prof Jai Prakash Rai of the Faculty of Law, Banaras Hindu University under the Law Lecture Series

JAMMU, May 19: Department of Law, University of Jammu organized a guest lecture by Prof Jai Prakash Rai of Faculty of Law, Banaras Hindu University on 19.05,2023 on the topic “Challenges before Indian Constitution” for LL.B, LL.M, and Ph.D. Scholars for the Department of Law, University of Jammu, Jammu.

Prof. Satinder Kumar, Dean and HoD, Department of Law delivered a welcome address and introduced Prof. Jai Prakash Rai to the audience. He also highlighted the relevance and importance of the topic of the lecture to the audience. He also informed the audience about the various initiatives and steps taken by the Department of Law in the recent past including the Law Lecture Series.

Prof Jai Prakash Rai while delivering the lecture highlighted various challenges faced by the Indian Constitution. He started the lecture from the independence of India and highlighted problems like diversity, heterogeneity of caste, race, ethnic identity, disparity of income, and living standards. Further, Prof Rai highlighted issues and problems faced by the Constituent Assembly and how they handled the issues of critical importance while drafting the Indian Constitution.  He also briefly touched on issues, and solutions relating to citizenship, state, fundamental rights, media trials, the position of President of India, the Independence of the Judiciary, Amending powers of the constitution, and the theory of basic structure and implied restrictions. The lecture was followed by an interactive session, wherein students raised many queries which were addressed and answered by Prof. Rai.

The formal vote of thanks was delivered by Prof. Sanjay Gupta and he along with it shared his thoughts and memories with the guest speaker. The lecture was attended by faculty members of the Department including Prof. Savita Nayyar, Dr. Vijay Saigal, Dr. Raj K Sandhu,and  Dr. Navdeep Kour Sassan.
