Bhaderwah Campus’s Computer Science Department Empowers Jail Inmates

Awards Certificates Upon Completion of Three-Month Course

BHADERWAH, October 16: The Department of Computer Science and Information Technology (IT) Bhaderwah Campus is making a profound difference in the lives of incarcerated individuals by providing them with essential skills and Computer knowledge through a three-month certificate e-learning course. The certificate distribution ceremony was a moment of pride and accomplishment for both the inmates and the educational institution.

In a ceremony held today at District Jail Bhaderwah , certificates were awarded by Dr Jatinder Manhas Head of the Department of Computer Science & IT, Bhaderwah Campus, in the presence of Superintendent District Jail Bhaderwah Mr. Mushtaq Ahmed Malla to the enthusiastic Jail inmates who successfully completed the program. The first three months course was run from 15th May to 15th August 2023 and on 29th August exams were conducted.

Rector Bhaderwah Campus Prof. Rahul Gupta in his massage congratulated both Dr Jatinder Manhas and Mr. Mushtaq Ahmed Malla for the successful culmination of this three months e-learning course. “The success of this e-learning course at District Jail Bhaderwah, the University of Jammu’s commitment to social responsibility and community engagement. By extending the reach of education to the incarcerated population, the university is paving the way for a brighter, more educated future for all,” he added further saying that it is the Vision of Vice Chancellor University of Jammu Prof. Umesh Rao to carry forward extension activity programmes.

The Computer Science and IT program, in collaboration with the District Jail Bhaderwah, is designed to equip inmates with practical skills in computer science, programming languages, software development, and digital literacy. Over the course of three months, dedicated faculty members at the Bhaderwah Campus provided hands-on training and guidance to the participants, empowering them with the tools they need to pursue a brighter future upon reintegration into society.

Dr. Jatinder Manhas Head of Computer Science Bhaderwah Campus highlighted the significance of the program, stating, “Education has the potential to break barriers and create opportunities. This program represents a stepping stone towards positive change for these individuals, and we are immensely proud of their dedication and hard work.”

He further said that it was the continuous efforts of Arif Haleem Khateeb, External Relations Officer Bhaderwah Campus who liaisoned the course and created a good communication between both the organizations for the successful culmination of this three months course. . “Department of Computer Science & IT, Bhaderwah Campus, is proud to be a part of this initiative, aligning with our mission to foster a learning environment that transcends traditional boundaries,” he added saying further that Bhaderwah Campus believe that education has the power to transform lives, and by reaching out to incarcerated individuals, we are fostering a culture of rehabilitation, empathy, and hope.”

Superintendent District Jail Bhaderwah Mr. Mushtaq Ahmed Malla thanked the Rector Bhaderwah Campus Prof. Rahul Gupta for such initiative for the inmates of the District Jail Bhaderwah Bhaderwah. He further said that such kind of initiatives  are always fruitful and beneficial for the society.

Inmates who participate in these educational programs while incarcerated are statistically proven to be less likely to re-offend, highlighting the importance of such initiatives in breaking the cycle of crime., Programmer emphasized the University’s dedication to creating a positive impact through education.

The faculty members who were part of this program include Dr Abid Sarver, Bablu Sharma ,Dr  Neeraj, Abrar Sheikh, Ms. Upma ,  Ms Priya, Parvesh Singh, Yassir Ali and Rahat Ali Mughal.
