Is Astroneer Crossplay?
If you’ve ever found yourself staring at your Astroneer base, wishing your friend on another platform could just hop in and help you dig through alien soil or launch into orbit, you’re definitely not alone.
The dream of cross-platform play has become something of a gold standard in modern gaming. But are things the same with Astroneer?
Let’s find out the crossplay availability in Astroneer along with the supported platforms!
Is Astroneer Crossplay?
Well, it depends on which platforms you’re talking about. The developers at System Era Softworks have implemented limited crossplay, but only between certain ecosystems. Here’s how it breaks down:
Astroneer supports crossplay between Windows 10 (Microsoft Store) and Xbox. Because both platforms operate under Microsoft’s ecosystem, they support seamless crossplay via Xbox Live.
Astroneer also supports crossplay between Steam and other PC versions. This means Steam players can play with other Steam players or with those using direct IP connections on PC. There’s also some unofficial workaround support via dedicated servers.
Unfortunately, Astroneer does not support crossplay between PlayStation and other platforms. This means PlayStation players have to be on the same platform to play together in a single game session.
Nintendo Switch also lacks crossplay support in Astroneer. This means Switch players cannot team up with any other platform players.

Why Doesn’t Astroneer Support Full Crossplay?
It’s not that the devs don’t care, quite the opposite. System Era Softworks has been fairly transparent: full crossplay is a tricky, expensive, and sometimes bureaucratic nightmare.
Cross-platform compatibility requires coordination with different console makers, constant updates, and new infrastructure. For a small studio, that’s a mountain to climb.
Final Thoughts
So, is Astroneer crossplay?
Only partially. Xbox and Windows 10 players can explore the stars together, but everyone else is grounded in their own separate universe. It’s a bit of a bummer, especially considering how perfect Astroneer feels for co-op exploration, but that’s the current reality.
In the meantime, if you’re itching to play with friends, make sure you’re on compatible platforms. Otherwise, it might be time to dust off your old Xbox or hop onto a PC running Windows Store just for a shot at that sweet, sweet cosmic co-op.
