Venus Set (Tāra Ast) from Friday, 12 December; and Venus Rise (Tāra Uday) on Sunday, 01 February – Mahant Rohit Shastri, Jyotishacharya

Jammu & Kashmir: According to Vedic astrology, marriage and other auspicious ceremonies are performed only when the planets Jupiter (Guru) and Venus (Shukra) are in their rising phase (Uday). In this regard, Mahant Rohit Shastri, Jyotishacharya and President of Shri Kailakh Jyotish avim Vedic Sansthan Trust, stated that the rising of Guru and Shukra is considered essential for conducting marriages and all auspicious rituals.

In the year 2025, Venus will set in the eastern direction on 12 December at 02:10 AM, and in the year 2026 Venus will rise again in the western direction on 01 February, Sunday, at 07:05 AM. During this entire period, marriages and other auspicious ceremonies must be strictly avoided. Hence, in the year 2026, auspicious timings (shubh muhurat) for marriages and other ceremonies will begin only after 01 February.

Three days before Venus sets, the period is considered “Vārddhakya,” and up to three days after Venus rises, it is considered “Bālātva Doṣa.” Performing any auspicious activity during these days is also prohibited.

Mahant Shastri clarified that ceremonies like engagement (sagai) may be performed during the period of Guru and Shukra setting, provided they are conducted in an auspicious muhurat. These do not attract any astrological defects.

The setting or rising of a “tāra” refers to the disappearance or reappearance of a planet, just as we observe sunrise and sunset. According to astronomy, the Sun is the nearest star to Earth and is self-luminous, while other planets only reflect its light. In Indian astrology, Jupiter and Venus are referred to as “tāra” (stars).

The following activities are prohibited during the setting periods of Jupiter and Venus:

Marriage

Housewarming (Grihapravesh)

Mundan (tonsure ceremony)

Oath-taking

Foundation stone-laying

Completion rituals of vows (Vrat Udyapan)

Sacred thread ceremony (Upanayana)

Swayamvar

If a person is entering into remarriage, then Guru–Shukra setting, Vedha, Lagna Shuddhi, and the prescribed marriage months do not apply and are not considered defective.

For entering an old or renovated house, the setting of Guru–Shukra is not considered. One may shift into a repaired or renovated building even during this period.

According to astrological belief:

Traveling during the setting of Venus can subdue enemies.

Practices related to Vashikaran performed during Venus setting attain quicker results.

While traveling, Venus being in front or on the right side is considered inauspicious.

The second ceremonial arrival of the bride (Dwiragaman) is prohibited during Guru–Shukra setting; however, in urgent circumstances, it may be done on Diwali.

In situations such as national distress, political instability, town entry, deity installation, or pilgrimage, the bride’s second arrival is considered free of defects.

A menstruating woman receiving Mantra Diksha during Venus rise is considered auspicious.

Except for postnatal purification, all other auspicious activities are prohibited during the setting period of Guru and Shukra.

The following Antardashas are considered troublesome during Guru–Shukra setting:

Jupiter in Jupiter’s Antardasha

Venus in Venus’s Antardasha

Jupiter in Venus’s Antardasha

Venus in Jupiter’s Antardasha

Venus in Saturn’s Antardasha and Saturn in Venus’s Antardasha

Other planetary Antardashas involving Jupiter and Venus may also give unfavorable results.

If a widow or abandoned woman undergoes remarriage, then Guru–Shukra setting, Vedha, Lagna Shuddhi, and prescribed marriage months do not impose any defect.
