GDC Surankote hosts workshop on Intellectual Property Rights, IP Management for start-ups

POONCH, MAY 23: Institution Innovation council (IIC) of Government Degree College Surankote today hosted a one day workshop on Intellectual Property Rights and IP Management for startups.

The workshop was attended by a large number of students and staff members. The main aim of the workshop was to educate students and faculty members about the significance of Intellectual Property Rights in the current scenario. The proceedings of the workshop were conducted by Dr. Khaleel Rishi (HoD Urdu). He welcomed the faculty and the participants and highlighted the initiative of the Ministry of Education (MoE) which has launched the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) program in the  NAAC accredited colleges of UT of J and K.

Dr. Mohammad Ashfaq (convener IIC and HoD Geography) deliberated on Fostering Innovations Among Young Minds. He also discussed the need for Innovative entrepreneurship and the role of IPR world over. He also portrayed the work progress of the IIC of GDC Surankote during the 2nd quarter of 2022-23 in the form of short video.

Dr. Syed Ovais (HoD Chemistry) was the keynote speaker. He provided an insight into Intellectual Property Rights and relevant laws. He briefly discussed various forms of intellectual property like copyright, trademark, patents, trade-secrets, geographical indications etc. He also emphasized the advantages of patenting and overall management of Intellectual Property for start-ups and budding entrepreneurs.

Furthermore, Dr. Ovais also deliberated the “Scheme for Intellectual Property Protection (SIPP)” which is exclusively designed to nurture emerging technologies in startups and assist them in protecting the commercial benefit out of it.

The program was concluded by the Presidential address by the College Principal Prof (Dr) Rani Mughal. Dr. Mughal in her speech appreciated the IIC cell of the college, Dr. Mohammad Ashfaq and Dr. Syed Ovais for their initiative. She conveyed that students should come up with novel and innovative ideas for the betterment of human life which has become the need of the hour. She said that the workshop would prove to be beneficial for the students as well as for faculty members as they were educated with deep understanding of Intellectual property rights and its management.

The workshop culminated with a formal vote of thanks by Prof. Khaleeq Qazi, staff secretary of the college.
