6 Classic Indian Comics That Made 90s Childhood Awesome

India is home to a vast variety of comics that have entertained and made us wiser growing up. The world before the internet was filled with comics, and children used to love reading them. One can still remember the charm of subscribing to comics and eagerly waiting to get our hands on them to read them. Here’s a list of comics that will take every 90s kid down memory lane-

1. Chacha Chaudhary

An elderly red-turbaned man, Chacha Chaudhary, along with his ‘nagging’ wife Binni Chachi, pet dog Rocket and Sabu, his assistant from Jupiter, are really fun to read about. It was always fun to witness Chacha Chaudhary; his wit and intelligence always saving the day. He was such a popular character that they eventually turned the comic into a TV show. The theme song still rings in our ears. His favourite dialogue’ “Chacha Chaudhary’s brain is faster than a computer,” taught us that intelligence is much stronger than any physical strength.

2. Champak

Champak was a little different from its counterparts because it included jokes, puzzles, riddles, teasers, comics etc., all wrapped up in one. It was a fortnightly magazine which was quite popular among children. It incorporated animals and birds as its protagonists and antagonists doling out life advice to all, including believing in ourselves and not superstitions.

3. Akbar Birbal

Birbal was a witty, smart and humorous royal courtier in emperor Akbar’s court. This comic is all about how Birbal uses his intelligence to outplay all the ministers in the court, which makes us laugh out loud. Akbar throws complicated challenges to Birbal, which he solves in an innovative manner.

4. Nagraj

Just like Marvel and DC superheroes, Nagraj is a half-snake half-human superhero who turned his back on being a villain to emerge as a hero. His exceptional powers are an amalgamation of sci-fi, mythological and fiction. These comics were popular because of the taboo and myths revolving around the mystical powers of snakes.

5. Pinki

This comic was about a five-year-old naughty girl who was accompanied by her pet squirrel ‘Kut Kut’. The whole neighbourhood was intimidated because of her mischievousness. Her main victims were her friends Bhiku, Champu and neighbour Jhapat Ji. Her character was constantly featured in Chacha Chaudhary and Biloo comics because of her popularity.

6. Amar Chitra Katha

Released in 20 different languages, Amar Chitra Katha’s books depict mythological stories, folklore, essential personalities and culture through beautiful illustrations. It illustrates stories much better than our textbooks making life lessons even more palatable. The format and style continue to enthral everyone in that they struck a chord with elders as well as children.
